Autumn in Northern Indiana
Once you’ve filled up your bushels at our pumpkin patches and farmer’s markets, get your fill of incredibly unique festivals. Follow the yellow brick road to the Wizard of Oz Festival in Downtown Chesterton—the largest and second oldest Wizard of Oz Festival in the U.S. Or get a heaping helping of everything Elvis at the Elvis FANtasy Fest.
On the last weekend of September, the Scarecrow Festival promises fun for the whole family. It’s a daily dose of entertainment, food and heaps of activities for the kids as Wanatah welcomes the autumn with style.
And the Village of Winona welcomes you to an annual Fall Festival that features artisan demonstrations and shopping throughout the lakeside village as well as a 24-hour bike race on the more than 10 miles of tremendously-popular mountain bike trails along the banks of Winona Lake.
One of the most exciting places to be, at this time of year, is in the midst of Notre Dame football pageantry. Immerse yourself in Football Weekend traditions that have been celebrated for over a century. There’s nothing like being here. Pep Rallies. Tailgating. Irish on the Green. The Player Walk. The Irish Guard Inspection. The Victory March. The roar from the Student Section. It’s everything that makes Notre Dame football legendary. And everything you need for a glorious autumn weekend in South Bend.
Community takes center stage in the autumn with the Annual Heartland Artists Regional Art Exhibit. Open to local artists in all media, the show is juried and awards over $3000 in prize money to winners. It’s a great way to see the work of up-and-coming Marshall County artists and maybe add a few new items to your wish list.
One thing you can’t miss is the Great Pumpkin Tree in Wakarusa. Standing 17 feet tall, the tree is made with over 200 pumpkins! It’s also the centerpiece of the Wakarusa Harvest Halloween Party, which promises spooktacular fun for all ages. Enjoy a hayride, a costume contest and special fall savings throughout the downtown.
In the autumn, thoughts turn to cozying up under a big, beautiful quilt. The Honeyville Quilt Auction features 200 quilts and several shops and markets along the Amish Backroads also feature quilts. Be sure to stop in to Handmade Quilts, Fry’s Handmade Quilts, Lolly’s Fabric & Quilts, Quilt Designs, The Quilt Shop and the many other local shops carrying a kaleidoscope of colorful quilt work.
