Who would have imagined white water rafting right in the middle of downtown South Bend? Be prepared to get soaked and have the ride of your life on this thrilling course that’s great for beginners and advanced rafters alike. This three-mile waterway runs at a water scale rating of 2 during recreational rafting and kayaking hours – with a flow speed of 450 to 500 cubic feet per second. All required rafting equipment is provided and instruction is available for beginners and advanced rafters.

If you’re not so adventurous, more than five miles of paved and lighted paths along the St. Joseph River allow for easy viewing of all waterway activities and competitions. Several regional, national and international competitions are hosted on the East Race Waterway annually. There’s also a fish ladder with seasonal viewing of Chinook salmon and steelhead trout, plus nearby fishing for both, as well as smallmouth bass.
